How to Replace an audi tt key case G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are different pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found 0ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. 3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. Some of the symptoms of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when you're in gear. If you experience any of these issues it is likely your sensor is failing and needs replacing. They're cheap and easy to find particularly if they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. When this sensor fails, it will affect the performance of the transmission, as well as the rest of the car's components.
